Dr. Yoko Tsukada, Oral Medicine & Pathology Specialist, joins WRDG

24/6/2016

Picture
Some people are surprised to learn that dentists look at more than just teeth and gums. We are also looking at function and for diseases affecting the soft tissues and structures within the upper and lower jaws. Sometimes, the conditions people suffer from are complex enough to need specialized care. For those patients, we have a new team member.

WRDG has recruited specialist associate, Dr. Yoko Tsukada. She is a dual certified specialist in oral medicine and oral pathology, and is the only one currently registered in South Surrey and White Rock.
Dr. Tsukada will add extra depth to the care we provide our patients who are suffering from complex oral health issues, such as: TMJ/jaw dysfunction, oral-facial pain, soft tissue conditions, oral cancer, and general health problems affecting the mouth.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Tsukada is a clinical assistant professor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry, a specialist staff member at Vancouver General Hospital, and a staff member at the BC Cancer Agency in the Oral Oncology outpatient clinic and the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant program.

Selecting Tomorrow’s Dentists

30/1/2016

Picture
The University of British Columbia invited Dr. Hird to spend today interviewing applicants for the UBC Dentistry Class of 2020.

The faculty uses a progressive multiple mini interview format that is designed to select prospects that are the most suitable to contemporary dental practice. It involves many short independent assessments, in a timed circuit, to obtain an aggregate score of each candidate’s soft skills. Who will make the cut!?

Continued Learning at the Kois Center

13/10/2015

Dr. Duprat has just returned from an intensive five-day course at the Kois Center in Seattle WA where she received advanced training in complex treatment planning. This curriculum emphasizes an evidence-based approach to assess risk and improve outcomes.

Volunteer Award

6/3/2015

In a ceremony last night, at the 2015 Pacific Dental Conference, Dr. Hird was given the CDSBC Award of Merit in recognition of his contributions to the regulation of dentistry in the province. He has volunteered for the CDSBC since 2007 and was appointed as a committee chair in 2011.

The College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) is the regulatory body for dentists, dental therapists and certified dental assistants in BC; its core function is to protect the public by overseeing the conduct and competence of its registrants.

Continued Learning at Spear Campus

28/4/2014

Many of our patients have already experienced the convenience of CEREC one-visit dentistry at our South Surrey – White Rock dental office. CEREC is a type of CAD/CAM system (computer-aided design and manufacturing) that allows our dentists to take digital impressions and then make custom-designed porcelain restorations (like crowns and other white fillings) on-site, usually in one appointment and with no temporaries. It can also be used for some more complicated situations like implants and certain types of temporary and permanent bridges.

Dr. Duprat and Dr. Hird spent this past weekend at the Spear Campus in Scottsdale, Arizona; it is the largest hands-on CEREC training facility in the world, and where Dr. Regan is also a mentor. Such courses keep our dentists current in this ever-developing field, learning the latest developments and updates that expand their skills to deliver the highest level of patient care and convenience. This was among the many courses our dentists and allied staff take throughout the year.

If you like the idea of this service, contact at our South Surrey – White Rock dental office to schedule your one-visit crown or restoration, and to take advantage of another dental technology at our office.

BC Dental Association Launches YourDentalHealth.ca

17/3/2014

Picture
The BC Dental Association launched a new public education program today called Your Dental Health, on behalf of its member dentists and dental specialists (which include our  dentists and in-house specialists). It provides general consumer dental health information, and promotes the value of dental care in preventing and detecting oral health problems. Part of the program is a new dental health website that we think you will find useful and prompt discussion about your individual care and that of children and seniors in your families. Check it out!

14th Annual Toothfairy Gala & BCDA Awards

9/3/2014

Dr. Hird attended the Pacific Dental Conference gala fundraiser at the Vancouver Convention Centre on March 8th which benefited the UBC Dentistry Community Outreach Programs.

These programs provide unique learning opportunities for dental students to expand skills beyond the UBC campus and develop their own sense of social responsibility. As well, the programs provide free oral health care and education to a wide demographic of people in need – children, elders, new immigrants, the working poor, medically compromised people, people challenged with drug and alcohol abuse, those escaping various forms of abuse, First Nations – both locally and provincially.

Sports Dentistry

20/2/2014

Picture
Like many, we are watching the Sochi Winter Olympics. But most people have probably not thought of the role of dentistry in peak athletic performance.

The most obvious task is preventing and treating oral-facial injuries, considered the most common type of injury in sport.  Mouthguards are commonly used to protect teeth, but they also reduce the incidence and severity of concussions.  Besides causing pain and discomfort, dental injuries and disease can interfere with training and competition time. Some procedures such as extractions also need to be done during the off-season for impact sports. Dental disease can also impact nutrition and thus the physical condition.

Dental care can also identify habits and conditions associated with certain sports that put oral health at risk, such as oral cancer from chewing tobacco or dental damage from eating disorders.

The Globe & Mail recently published an interesting article about the Canadian olympic dental program.

If you want to find out more about your dental needs in relation to your sport, contact the office for an appointment with one of our doctors.

New Website Launch

15/2/2014

Many of our patients will already have noticed the updated look to our office. And now, we are launching this new website so that every part of the practice reflects who we are and why we do what we do.

We take great pride in earning the invitations to the practice that our patients continually extend to family, friends and colleagues and we hope that this website helps to build trust in us when referring someone.

The blog will provide a place to provide updates about our office, links to interesting news articles, and information about oral health.

The responsive design of the site will be more useable across a wide variety of devices, from desktop computer to tablet to smartphone.  The highly visual layout makes for easier navigation and faster access to needed information.

We’d like to thank Tony Hird, Dr. Hird’s brother, for designing the site and photography, and Jason Lachance for our staff portraits.

Any feedback is appreciated. Let us know what you like and if there is anything we should add.
